Just been reading through the defenders article on the Guardian:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/oct/21/greatest-ever-football-team-defenders

Paul Doyle's selection:
Cafu (Brazil), Lúcio (Brazil), Beckenbauer (West Germany), Lizarazu (France).
---------------------------------------------------------
So no mention of Bobby Moore.
But loved this reply:

Lúcio?! I know he's a very good defender, but there are many more who were better. Franco Baresi, as already mentioned, Moore, Cannavaro and the legend that is Andy Morrison.

:D

Appears so. Read the article?
"Essentially, Maldini was a dishy Gary Neville. The defensive David Beckham."

I suppose they have to be a bit controversial for it to be interesting cos the best ever XI has been done a million times over. Still, not having the likes of Cruyff, Di Stefano and Pele in there does make it pretty worthless.

Cruyff falls into midfield. And who did you see from who each journalist mentions. Some flaws in the poll.
Gerrard makes the list an may get into the 4 selected?
Zidane, Cruyff, Platini and (ahem) Best from that list.
Romario and Maradona up front for me.
I can't believe Bergkamp made the strikers list. It seems some forget how he did in Italy. He was glad to get away from Inter.

Hmm hate is such a strong and emotive word. Especially when it comes to footballers. But Lucio has become one, if not the one player I truly despise. There's just something about him, that everytime I saw him for Bayern München or Brazil, I hoped a referee would just send him off.

So, if anyone is interested, the polls are open on the Guardian website for strikers and midfield.

Lucio is the most guilty diving piece of shit there is today. Great defender mind.

Greatest World XI?

For a second there I thought I'd wandered onto the rag 606 board circa 2004.
