Tony Mowbray's tenure as the Celtic manager has ended, just nine months after his appointment at Parkhead.

Last night's shock 4-0 defeat to St Mirren proved too much for the Celtic board, who have watched their team fall 10 points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premier League; the Ibrox outfit also have two games in hand over their city rivals. Celtic have lost 13 competitive games this season and have hope of winning only one trophy, the Scottish Cup, despite such transfer additions as the £68,000-a-week Robbie Keane.

Mowbray's fate was sealed during a lunchtime meeting with Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, with lawyers also on hand to negotiate a settlement payment over his contract.

It is expected Celtic will explain the parting of the ways between them and the 46-year-old Mowbray as being "by mutual consent".

Neil Lennon, Celtic's first-team coach and former captain, is expected to take control of team affairs at least until the end of the season.

Norwich City's manager Paul Lambert and the out-of-work Mark Hughes have already been linked with the vacancy in Glasgow. Yet Lambert stated within the last month that he wants to remain within English football and Hughes may prove beyond the SPL side's budget.

I was surprised they hired him after West Brom were relegated. There was a lot of crap about West Brom going down playing nice football the correct way. Utter shite. They finished bottom of the table.

There are plenty of better managers out there. Celtic got what they deserved.

Yeah. He still managed to keep Celtic in the top two.

First time in 20 years or something stupid like that. Quite a record to break their coach, and 4 - nil no less.

I love it how Scottish football fans argue that the SPL is not a two horse race.

They are right. This season it has been a one horse race.

There seem to be fewer skangers in Celtic tops wandering around Dublin in Celtic tops these days.

This is a good thing.

Was there a bad batch of heroin doing the rounds recently? That may account for why there are less of them.

The possibility of Mark Hughes becoming the new Celtic manager has grown after Mark Bowen – who assisted the Welshman when he was in charge at Manchester City, described him being linked with the Parkhead post as a "pleasant expectation".

Hughes has been out of work since being sacked by City in December and is among the favourites to replace Tony Mowbray at Celtic after he lost his job there last week.

Neil Lennon, Celtic's current caretaker manager, has signalled his hope to take the job full-time but looks likely to miss out to Hughes, particularly as it is believed that the club has already made contact with the former Manchester United striker's advisor, Kia Joorabchian.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Bowen, who has worked alongside Hughes at Wales, Blackburn Rovers and City, said: "Mark has always said it has to be the right vehicle, the right situation. He's always been a manager or coach who wants to go in and build a place and make a difference long term. It's what we did with Wales and Blackburn and we were in the process of doing at Manchester City.

"It seems to be the natural thing at the moment that Mark is linked with any vacant manager's position. His talents are widely recognised and since City we've been waiting for the right opportunity. In that sense, I suppose we were expecting this speculation and it's a pleasant expectation to see that he's been linked with the Celtic post. Mark's credentials are there for all to see."

Bowen's continuing his job as Hughes' mouthpiece then.

I think that would be a good role for him actually. Get some experience under his belt and then head back to the Premiership.

He'd win a few titles with Celtic if he took the job.

Have to agree, if he could get them playing the kind of football we played, passing and flowing he would walk that league easy.
