Avram Grant manager of Portsmouth

'No duty to other teams': Grant

Avram Grant has hinted he will make a farce of the Barclays Premier League survival race by fielding weakened teams for the rest of the season.

The Portsmouth manager is furious his team have been condemned to play Championship football next term after being deducted nine points for going into administration.

He will hold a crisis meeting with his players today in an attempt to discover how they want to approach their remaining nine league games, when they have nothing left to play for.

And in a threat to the integrity of the Premier League he has refused to rule out two stark possibilities.

He may field weakened teams, preferring to keep his best players fit for their April 10 FA Cup semi-final date against Fulham or Tottenham at Wembley.

And he may listen sympathetically to players like David James, Nadir Belhadj and Hassan Yebda if they say they do not want to risk getting injured before the World Cup.

Grant is in no mood to bow to any league dictat that he should field his strongest team in every game.
Nadir Belhadj of Portsmouth

Sympathetic ear: Grant may rest South Africa-bound players such as Nadir Belhadj

Grant said: ‘We don’t have a duty to the other Premier League teams. The Premier League has a duty to the other teams.

‘We have a duty to Portsmouth, and I have a duty to football.

‘We’ve tried everything in the last months to keep the spirit of football and what I think football is about and I don’t see any reason to do it when we haven’t got a target. Of course our target now is the semi-final.’

tbh i think docking a team in administration of points, when they are nailed to the foot of the table, a bit farcical. his response is equally insane.

Portsmouth's financial difficulties are so severe that Avram Grant has lost the use of his company car.

yeah but everyone knows that's the rules, it's not some knee jerk response. They funded catflap and his FA Cup win and have fucked up. This is the consequence. No sympathy for them

Portsmouth have been fined by the Premier League after breaching a series of rules and regulations this season.

The fine has been reported as being in the region of £1m and is understood to relate to the club's late payment of wages to playing staff and late payment of outstanding transfer cash.

"Portsmouth have been fined for a series of breaches of our rules and regulations during the course of this season," a League spokesman confirmed.

Earlier this season, the Premier League used £7m of TV money due to be given to Pompey to pay off outstanding transfer fees to other clubs.

Portsmouth entered administration in February and a nine-point deduction was confirmed last week, leaving the club facing almost certain relegation.

The fine will be paid to the League out of the club's share of television money.

seem to be kicking a team not only when down, but also out cold.

It's can't believe the ludicrosity of it either, Pompey are fingered and yet they want to impose the penalty as well. Brilliant.

like fining people who don't pay their fines (eg TV License) and then imprisoning them after they can't pay their fines. The money it costs to keep them in prison usually far outweighing any fines they'd owe
