here me out before you all go 'oh look at PB trying to wind us all up...

Look at his medal haul.

without his goal in the FA cup semi final, two minutes into injury time, after a last minute penalty miss, man u wouldn't have won the treble.

One club man  (i know i know, but he didn't ever play for us)

Twenty years in the limelight and only recently have they found anything.

scored in every premiership league season since it's inception.

still fucking at it. since we were kids. bert included.

It's truly staggering, and i for one am glad that i got to see his whole career.

SO yes or no? and give your reasons for why not and who you think is instead...

edit for drunk spelling.

He's a brilliant footballer no doubt, but I don't think he really captures peoples admiration and passion enough to be considered one of the greats. Could you really compare him to the likes of Eusébio, Maradona, Pelé, Best etc? I don't think greatness is measured in medals and trophies, Giggs essentially stayed at one club his entire career (a very good club) and farmed medals. If he had joined another team or two I reckon it would be different.

:shocker:

Dalglish was a miles better player.

Also, from the Munichs of that era, Scholes & Keane. *spits*

In fact there's loads. Having a long career at a successful club doesn't make you the greatest player, it just makes you the most successful. He's only just passed Phil Neal's medals "hall". Would Phil Neal have been your previous "greatest player of all time"? He's probably your greatest manager ever too, right?

Those three players I mentioned up there ^^ were more talented and had much more of an influence on the pitch You'd really say Giggs was a better player than Maradona Or Zidane? Or Messi?

Before all the sleeze came out you could maybe put a case for him being one of the best professionals of all time. You couldn't really say he's a role model any more seeing as he was philandering for the last decade at least, including with his brother's wife.

Greatest footballer suggests the greatest talent, and he's good but not that good. Not in the same class as some of the names already mentioned. I genuinely thinking Messi is the most talented footballer the world's ever seen. Whether or not he keeps it going long enough to go down as the greatest ever player remains to be seen.

By any scale, he isn't the greatest.

The 'one club man' status, career length and medal collection are impressive but I'd offer Paulo Maldini as a similar 'one club man' with a better record (five European Cups versus two).

As for scoring in every season, very impressive but hardly unique, Gary Speed is the first player that springs to mind having achieved a similar record. Giggs' career just happened to start when such a record would happily coincide with the inception of the Premier League.

Messi, in all reality, is liable to remain (basically) a 'one club man' and will no doubt beat most records going. There is still room for him to fuck it up, but if he carries on as he is now, there's no doubt he'll be the best by a margin IMO.

His career has been on the coat tails of other better players at United eg Cantona Scholes etc.

As far as the truly greats are concerned, Pele, Best, Cruyff, Bell, Meredith etc. He is not in the same street. In fact I would go so far as to say he is not even on the same council estate

I went to the pre-season friendly with Milan a few years ago just so I could see Maldini play. He was about 40 but had always been one of my favorite players, him and Baresi. Giggs doesn't breathe the same air.

Gonna concur with all on here....the answer is no.

He can be put in the great pro list with people like Emlyn Hughes, Stuart Pearce, Gary Neville etc; people who made the most out of their ability.

And he got loads of medals like Sammy Lee, John O Shea, Perry Groves etc.

And he is/was clearly a very, very good player.
But not in the same league as Laudrup, Pele, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Best, Baggio, Horlock, Baresi, Kun's poppa in law, Van Basten, etc

I'm sure I heard once that he has questionable parentage and AIDS and therefore can't be considered a great
