Fulham finished 8th ahead of Villa and qualified for the Europa cup - seems obvious he's headed for Villa but for some reason this feels like nothing more than (at best) a sideways step for Hughes...

Why the hell would Villa go for Hughes when they could quite easily get Moyes?

I think in the long run Villa is a much better job. Fulham would be good next season but years down the line he won't get nearly as much funding and resources.

Villa definetly have the training facilities, youth academy and scouring network in place to create a really nice team they just need some squad investment and to keep getting Europa league football.

So I'm guessing O'Neill for Fulham?

Thread title fail. Should read "Hughes' contract at Fulham expires". He was only on a one-season deal.

Villa's a better club for him imo. Bigger attendances. Probs a bit more cash. Basis of a good team. Chance to work with Stevie Ireland again. He'll do well there I'd imagine. If he goes.

Sky Sports sources understand that Mark Hughes is not in the frame to take charge of Aston Villa despite leaving his role as Fulham manager on Thursday evening.

Gerard Houllier stepped down as Villa boss earlier this week to concentrate on his health and Villa immediately started searching for a replacement.

Hughes' departure from Craven Cottage then fuelled speculation that he would be appointed as Houllier's successor in the near future.

However, the Welshman insisted as he quit Fulham that he had not received an approach from anyone and that his decision had not been influenced by outside parties.

And Sky Sports sources understand that Villa are not currently considering Hughes as they look to fill the vacant hot-seat.

A number of other high-profile names have been linked with the position as Villa aim to build on a ninth-placed Premier League finish under Houllier.

Carlo Ancelotti, sacked by Chelsea at the end of the season, is now second favourite with Sky Bet to land the job after having his odds slashed.

I think his long turn prospect would be better if he stayed put - a good tilt at the Europa, consolidating or improving Fulhams position would be impressive on anyone's cv...
Villa are on the decline, realistically can't see them competing for 4th unless something drastic (big investor) happens

Bastard fail. It was a two year contract that had a clause stating either party could give notice 1st June 2011.

What about Hughsey for Cardiff? Back home in Wales working with Bellamy and having the chance to get them promoted and be a hero?

I suspect he is hoping that Hiddink may not go to Chelsea.

Could this not have gone in my Premier league thread???? Sort yer heads out.

Only Joshing with yer, very surprised by this, i know he was being linked with the Villa job but with Fulham being in Europe, i thought he would have sticked with them.

slart fail. it had the option of extenting. he didn't.

not really big news. i'd like to see him at chelsea, there was talk of it before he came to us. he did ok for us (and played robinho when he didn't want to) and a good job at fulham.

Splitting hairs LOL

Villa apparently don't like the way he left and don't want him anymore, which makes the whole situation fairly baffling.

lol if Hughes goes to Chelsea i bet he'll waste their money like he did ours.

I hear a certain Mr Santa Cruz is going for a few quid.
