Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has won the Professional Footballers Association player of the year award for the first time in his career.

The 35-year-old beat team-mates Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin van der Sar as well as Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.

Despite winning a host of honours, including 10 Premier League titles, the PFA award had eluded Giggs until now.

He has hardly even played this season!?

Giggs' award is just a concession to the fact he's been playing at the top level for so long. On his actual contribution this year he doesn't deserve it, but it's voted for by his fellow players so yes.

I guess it just confirms that footballers are thick.

Stevie definitely deserved young player.

Oh right, that actually would make it better. Giggs probably does deserve one, life time achievement at the least. Ireland must be wondering what he has to do to win this, well Villa is higher than us, hopefully Ireland will give a shit and raise his game again next season. Stephen Ireland = looks funny but plays football like he's Brazilian.
