Wayne Rooney is right. Manchester United no longer have the means to match the ambition and wealth of their rivals

When Wayne Rooney signed for Manchester United in 2004, no one thought Sir Alex Ferguson would outlast him at the club.
Absent in spirit from Old Trafford and absent in person, Wayne Rooney at least gave his erstwhile public something of himself with a statement issued around two hours before kick-off. The timing alone must have angered Sir Alex Ferguson, but what of the substance of Rooney's remarks? Can Manchester United really be said to lack ambition and are they now so financially hamstrung they can no longer compete in the transfer market?

A glance at the teamsheet for the Bursaspor game would suggest the answers might be yes and yes. Federico Macheda up front and Bebé alongside Gabriel Obertan on the bench hardly sent out a message of strength to the rest of Europe and, even if Ferguson had attacking insurance in Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernández, one of those strikers is only just starting to show his true capabilities and the other is only just starting. Take Rooney out of the equation, as United found to their cost at the business end of last season, and the frontline begins to flatline.

all this talk of a CRISIS AT MANCHESTER UNITED appears to be attracting a lot of visitors. perhaps they wish to know more about the CRISIS INVOLVING ROONEY and his FALL OUT WITH FERGUSON over the CASH CRISIS that is looming at OLD TRAFFORD. perhaps they even wish to find out about the CRISIS AMONGST MANCHESTER HOOKERS should ROONEY LEAVE MANCHESTER UNITED.

Yeah, i also reckon Rooney could still be offski in 12 or 18 months. What Fergie did was buy Yernited time to appease the fans, but this has got Ronaldo#2 written all over it. When they win nothing again, the same doubts will raise themselves in Rooney's thick skull, and his agent will do the rest. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he's had some kind of clause written into his new contract about this, but we'll never find out. What Fergie couldn't afford to do, especially the financial fix Yernited find themselves in, was let their star player, the only one worth any kind of really big money, was to walk out for nothing. And Rooney seems to have gone along with this. Another thought, Fergie himself might not be around more than a year or two, and that's when Rooney will go. They could be right up shit street in the next couple of years especially when Giggs and Scholes call it a day. How do they replace those two? I wonder then, if we'll see Yernited implode. Keeps fingers crossed.

A Maltese newspaper has issued an apology to Gary Neville after misquoting the Manchester United defender in his own column. In a piece about striker Wayne Rooney, Neville was quoted as saying: "The best outcome was reached for all parties, except perhaps Manchester City." The Sunday Times of Malta newspaper accepted the last four words of the quote were added by a journalist. Rooney had said he wanted to leave Old Trafford but then signed a new deal. The paper said: "We apologise unreservedly to Mr Neville." A statement issued by editor Steve Mallia read: "With reference to Gary Neville's column in the Sunday Times of Malta of 24 October, the newspaper would like to clarify the following: At no point did Gary Neville state the phrase, 'Except perhaps Manchester City'. "These words were added by the journalist who worked on the column with Mr Neville and were never intended to appear in the printed version of the article. Mr Neville did not utter these words, nor did he allude to Manchester City in any way. "We apologise unreservedly to Mr Neville for the error and regret the considerable inconvenience it has caused him."

rooney probably feels somewhat indebted to the rags, therefore is happy enough to sign a new contract to make him a decent cash-cow.
