he Football Association has confirmed Roy Hodgson as England's new manager on a four-year contract.

Hodgson, 64, has been in talks with the FA since Monday after West Brom granted their coach permission to hold discussions over the England position.

The former Liverpool boss emerged as the FA's sole target for the position on Sunday, with Hodgson previously open about his willingness to manage his country should the opportunity arise.

Tottenham's Harry Redknapp had been considered the favourite for the role, but the FA targeted Hodgson due to his international experience, as he has overseen positions with Finland, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates.

Stuart Pearce had been in caretaker charge of the country following Fabio Capello's departure in February, with the Under-21 coach taking the reins for England's 3-2 friendly loss against Netherlands in March.

Hodgson will now begin his preparations for England's Euro 2012 campaign - where they face Ukraine, Sweden and France in Group D - ahead of friendly matches versus Norway and Belgium.

He will remain in charge of West Brom for their final two Premier League matches of the season, against Bolton and Arsenal, before being released from his contract at the Hawthorns.

good lots of negative press about woy, don't know why - he's not redknapp and it will spell the end of gerrard and johnson's england careers which is all good

Good choice. I didn't really think about him in the run up, but he's got a good international record. I expect he'll try and keep things simple in the Euros though and build from the back. But as usual, the FA have been very sensible in giving him a 4 year contract, meaning a big pay off if he turns out to be shit.
