Just watched a programme about the 1962 world cup in Chile.

If you have never seenthe battle of Santiago between Italy and Chile try and find it on Youtube or somewhere--well worth the effort.

I was trying to explain to my daughter that all teams played in various shades of grey in those days but more importantly that the games we saw from Chile in1962 took 2 days to appear on our tv because they were film which had to be flown back to London and then broadcast.
Next month we will be treated to live time broadcasts of virtually every moment of the competition except probably Woy going to the toilet.

We obviously will win the World Cup cos we beat Peru last night and we have Danny Welbeck in our team.

I knew it was too good to be true.

I was slowly coming round to Hodgson being manager and thinking he maybe able to get something out of the lads we haven't seen for a while.

Fuckin twats playing Milner at RB tonight.

What choo talkin bout Gal, it's s great idea. Glen Johnson cannot defend, and there no-one else to try there. Did u see how awful GJ was against Peru? Milner at RB is an option very much worth considering.

You don't put a square peg in a round hole, Smalling has played RB before i think. Milners gonna be wasted at RB.

You think Chris Smalling can do a better job at RB than Milner?? What planet are you on Gal?

No, I said Smalling has played RB before and he should be tried out there, not Milner.

Why haven't we got a sufficient number of Right backs in the squad anyway?

Because Walker's injured and Micah's broken? Smalling has been tried there and proved himself to be the worst player ever to put on an England shirt. Hodgson knows we won't get far with him or Johnson at right back so is looking to see whether Milner would be less of a liability. He can either play there or sit on the bench because he won't be starting in midfield. It's not about playing square pegs in round holes, it's about fielding the best team you can. Didn't Italy win the World Cup with Zambrotta at right back? Didn't Zabs start out as a right midfielder? If you want England to go into a World Cup with Chris Smalling as our starting right back then you and I have nothing further to say :hand:

was reading something from the graun yesterday, interview with jimmy, where it noted that his versatility was a bit of a blessing and a curse. having said that, jimmy is a far better right back than johnson as he can actually defend as well as offer the attacking overlapping option more competently. he won't be happy playing there though. as for smalling... i'm a better rightback. why they don't rehabilitate micah is a mystery, maybe once he moves and gets some game time he'll be back in contention.

Rooneys a frustrated RB isn't he, he spends some of the time there.

Is Johnson injured or is he just being rested???

If were that short on right backs lets go mad and play an actual RB, shit or not it's his position.

but he's shit gal, he's utter shit. he's not even a right back, he's a central defender that they tried to put in the least harmful position to justify his wages.

I'm sure Micah will get back in the England team after he's got a full season somewhere under his belt, I can understand him not featuring in this WC though. Johnson is terrible, even Liverpool fans can't stand him. That game against Palace was the worst performance you'll see from a right back in any game that Chris Smalling isn't playing in.

FTR I wouldn't have minded seeing Flannagan playing there. He had a good season at Pool playing out of position at left back.
