Rafael Benitez has been sacked by Inter Milan after just six months in the job
The former Liverpool boss is back on Merseyside where he is expected to spend Christmas, with the Italian club expected to confirm the news later on Wednesday.
England coach Fabio Capello and Leonardo are already been linked with the job.
Benitez's dismissal comes just days after he led Inter to the Club World Cup as they beat TP Mazembe 3-0 on Saturday. Following the match, the Spaniard urgied the Serie A side's board to back him, but Inter president Massimo Moratti instead refused to comment on Benitez's future and was seemingly unhappy with his demands.
Speaking after Saturday's win, Benitez said: "There are three possibilities for the club. One, 100% support for the coach and buy four or five players to build a stronger team with competition among the players to be able to carry on winning matches and trophies.
"Two, carry on like this without a project, without planning, and go ahead with one person to blame, for the whole season."
He added: "The third is to speak to my agent to reach an agreement if there is not this support. Simple."
Moratti said the comments "were not suitable for the situation" as Inter celebrated winning their fifth trophy of 2010 and on Monday added: "I prefer not to talk today to avoid the risk of creating controversies."
Mourinho has been in charge since the summer when Jose Mourinho left to join La Liga giants Real Madrid.
But Benitez has failed to deliver anywhere near the same kind of results as Benitez in Serie A, with Inter already 13 points behind league leaders and city rivals AC Milan.
Although Inter have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League, last month's 3-0 defeat to Werder Bremen did not go down well with Moratti.
Inter won the Serie A title, the Italian Cup and the Champions League last season under Mourinho.
