Totally agree with that.

Though it does sort of annoy me when people talk about the Italian team that won '06 as an "average" or "lucky" team. In my opinion they deserved to win it. They did "perhaps" have a slice of luck in the second round but they did beat Germany and deservedly so in the semi final. I also think they were the better team in the final as well.

Looking at our squad as a whole, Goalkeepers wise i wouldn't feel right with James or Robinson in goal, neither Foster or Hart would send me to sleep safe (not sure how Joe is doing at birmingham but someone said he had a stinker the other day).Kirkland hasn't gotta look in as of late. Robert Green would possibly be my first choice, and i can possibly see Almunia or Cudicini getting a call up.

Defence wise on the right Johnson could do a job but i feel he could get found out going forward to often. Terry i have no problem with, Rio i think hasn't had the greatest starts of the season therefore his position could be under threat, trouble is though who would trouble him there. Cahill at Bolton has been mentioned then you have Woodgate who is injured, Dawson who is injured, King i think has just about retired, Super Ned who i hope can get a few games this season who had been very good uptil his injury thus far i hope at least does make the squad.LB i have no qualms with, Cashley and Bridge can both do a great job there.

Midfield is our strongest force and have plenty of choices there with Joe Cole coming back to and i think Cattermole has had a cracking season so far.

Strikers wise i'd probably take, Crouch, Defoe, Rooney and maybe going on his form till now Bent.If any of them do get an injury as backup i'd include Heskey and Kevin Davies in there.

But we'll still go out on fookin pens!!!

Cattermole ain't gonna get a look in. Only 25 places in the squad, so two per position. Gerrard/Lampard/Barry are all guaranteed to go, and if Hargreaves gets fit, he should be on the plane too, otherwise it'll probably be Carrick. Doesn't leave a lot of space for fresh faces in the centre of the park.

We'll make the semi's at best.

Maybe it is good that not many fans expect us to win the competition for once!

By the time next summer comes round, the hype will be huge, with loads of statements like "best chance since '66" and "Capello's the best manager England have ever had" floating about. I think there'll be an absolute sh*tload of (deluded) fans who'll reckon we're just about favourite.

You are probably right, yea. We just live in hope I suppose. If you can't enjoy the hype before hand, when can you enjoy being an England fan? Certainly not when we get knocked out in the quarter-finals AGAIN!

I guarantee, because of the betting influx next summer, we will be favourites. Only because that much money will be spunked on England to win it, it's bound to happen

ENGLAND'S 2010 WORLD CUP CHANCES GO UP IN SMOKE, A BIT LIKE THE THING
THAT HAPPENED TO ONE OF THOSE FLARES THROWN ON TO THE PITCH THAT HAD
SMOKE COMING OUT OF THEM

At 5.14pm last Saturday, everything was right in the world for fans of
the Three Lions. England boasted a 100% record in a group containing
Andorra and Kazakhstan - well done Fabio, well done everyone - while
Germany were said to be in danger of not making it to South Africa
next summer, apparently, on account of having won only 22 points out
of 24. Yay! Balls to Germany and, conversely, hooray for us! What a
glorious nation!

A few hours later, it had all gone nips up, on account of: (1) the
inside of Rio Ferdinand's head having the same texture and
consistency of Orangey Bit, the signature substance in his favourite
mid-game snack; (2) Robert Green rolling out the red carpet for the
return of hapless Portsmouth goalkeeper Harold Lloyd and troubled
Manchester United stopper Buster Keaton; (3) England's Brave John
Terry taking root in the middle of the Dnipro Arena, allowing Artem
Milevski to brush past his branches every couple of minutes; (4)
Ashley Cole being beaten for pace by Andriy Shevchenko; and (5) Glen
Johnson therefore being England's best defensive player by a country
mile. Oh. my.

Germany qualified after all and, as they always go further than
England, Fabio and the lads might as well pack it in now.

Still, there is one upside, according to Frank Lampard: the team's
best player is injured. That's just dandy! Wayne Rooney has pulled
out of the game against Belarus at Wembley with a severe case of
having his wages paid by Manchester United. "He's obviously a good
player," Lampard admirably rationalised on the hoof today, "but it's
quite nice for us to have to get along without him. If we can see
other players coming through then it's a good thing for us." Right
you are. Lamps also had a word of support for the gorm-lite
Ferdinand, praising his "consistency" and suggesting "when the big
game comes, he will deliver". Just like he did in the Big Cup final
to Lionel Messi, against Holland to Dirk Kuyt, and against Manchester
City to Craig Bellamy, in fact.

Yep, Fabio and the lads might as well pack it in now.

England have as much chance as any other team of winning it.

tal ben hutchinson, i don't see any team other than Spain, Brazil, Italy or France winning it. The latter will pick up their game when the actual competition comes.

Holland have been electric for the past few years - attacking-midfield wise, there's very few that compare. They also have a fair few players who'll put everything in to the game (de Jong and Kuyt spring to mind).

Then Germany will get at least into the semi-finals. That's what they do.

I would love Holland to win it. Love it. But it'll never happen. Since I'm not from england and F.Ireland never make it to the WC I'm forced to support another team and it's alwayyys holland.

Nah, it's cause when I was 8 by cousins always beat me on ISS Pro superstar, until one day I was Holland* and beat one of them via a screamer from some forgotten RB. I never won with croatia..ever.

*At the time I had only ever been croatia. Also my cousin was being saudi Arabia, but being 8 I didn't realise they were crap.
