Post subject:  Crap England

Watching the Euros without supporting England has made me realise how much better other countries are than us. i always thought we were one of the best teams and always stood a chance.

but watching teams like spain and holland and the depth in quality they have, we are miles behind and the pressure that is put on them to win every game is ridiculous.

holland arent even considered to be one of the favourites really, well not before they beat italy anyway, and look at their forward options. whereas england have rooney and owen and then start to struggle with crouch and defoe next in line. holland can call upon Huntelaar, Van Nistelrooy, Van Persie, Van der Vaart, Babel. And have Kuyt and Venegoor as well.

Dunno why i thought to mention this, i just never really realised before as am to focused on supporting the team than analysing them.

I watched the France game on a big screen in Montpellier the other night and France were crap. The locals were not impressed.
I could not say that England are worse than them.
i was also most impressed by Holland.

Can we rename the thread "Slightly substandard England"? We're better than Greece, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, Turkey, Italy (from what I saw against Holland). There's 7 teams

Spain? Do me a favour, as they will fail as is the requirement.
Their defence didn't look overly impressive and if the Russians had a little more luck and also actually put in more effort, they could have got something from the game.
The Czechs - piss poor. No creativity.
The hosts Switzerland and Austria - CH were alright; Austria are total bobbins.
Germany - usual functional style.
Poland - better than England? Sure they gave the Germans a good game and could have scored a few themselves. But they are also so hit and miss.
Italy - dull and negative as always. But writ them off at your peril.
Greece - the holders. Someone is having a laugh. Better than England? LOL
Turkey - very physical in style. Didn't offer much or enough to go further.
Sweden - with those tired old legs. They will struggle later.
France - poor against Rumania.
Croatia - they were dreadful and looked a shadow of the side that played England.

Just leaves me with Portugal and the Netherlands as favourites thus far.
However, still too early to judge.

So saying that England is cack in comparison is a bit unfair. It's the Euros, not World Cup.

Russia beat us to qualification. Sweden beat us in the world cup. Greece are the holders and Italy are the world champions.

Italy were shite against Holland, Greece were substandard against Sweden, we'd do Sweden over. Russia showed last night they are out of their depth

Sweden? What an old team. At least England can draw on a pool of much younger players.
And as i said for Greece...LOL.
Italy are negative. that's why no one likes them. They played one decent game at the world cup and that was the semi-final against Germany.

Which I think vindicates the thread title. If Russia are out of there depth, we'd have drowned.

can you imagine what Spain would have done to us if that had been us and we had qualified in second place instead of Russia?

Have to disagree slightly, timps. spain look great going forward, but their back line doesn't impress me. casillas in goal is certainly class though.
then again, their attacking style would probably keep England overly occupied for the whole 90 minutes.
as someone once said: attack is the best form of defence.
was that Kevein Keegan? :D

he also said its better to be at the bottom of the first page on teletext than top of the second... he was a genius. maybe we should get him back now that hughes is dithering? :)

i think spain will play better in defence in other games, they lost concentration after going ahead. puyol and ramos are top defenders.

if football was less popular here we'd prob have the best cricket team. i think cricket loses a lot of talented sportsman to football. if you are good at one sport you are generally good at others. like apparently phil neville was better than flintoff when they played cricket together for lancashire. i think i heard that dwight yorke was better as a kid than brian lara when they played together also. in other sports bullard is very good at golf and owen is very good at snooker i am led to believe.
