If he plays tonight Beckham will equal Bobby Moore's record of 108 England caps as an outfield player. Shilton had 125 in goal.
Is it right to compare them though?
Moore played mostly in the era of no substitutes and I suspect that he played virtually every minute of the 108 games, whereas Beckham only played for 10 or 15 minutes in some of them.

I don't remember Moore being sent off, especially not for England, but to be fair to Beckham it is much easier to be sent off now than it was then.

I think that in his games Moore contributed more than Beckham, who for some years has only looked good at free kicks and crosses. I watched Moore a few times at Maine Road in the sixties and seventies and he was always in the right place at the right time, never seeming hustled or aggravated. Beckham, however has a tendency to run round at times like a headless chicken.

bit of a rhetorical ponderance there Bert?!

Who is going to disagree with you? There are no insightful arguments as the truth of this matter is so stark and apparent, subtlety is almost impossible.

Beckham will no doubt get praise lavished upon himself

I think if beckham couldn't take a free kick or cross a ball as he does he wouldn't be nowhere near the set up, only 1 time beckham has got me out of my seat is that free kick against greece.

Quite, I just thought I would mention it to see if anyone was interested.
It was probably the fuss they are making about Beckham which stirred me into commenting.

Bobby Moore never so much as got booked for England. I know refs let a lot more go back then but that's still a hell of an achievement...or lack of competitiveness -I never saw him play so I can't comment :p

He was very competetive. I am sure there are a number of ex professional footballers who would confirm that.

I preferred it when they were on his back at the end of SGE's reign. Money grabbing twat doesn't deserve to be allowed to sign for Milan, unless he has to pay for the transfer himself

Obviously just timed his tackles very well then, fair play to him.

Trouble is contracts and loyalty and decency and honour mean little today.

Utterly different games from then and now..
Moore got a lot in the home nations matches..
And everybodys moaning that beckhams are as a sub..

I dont think they compare at all..moore was a legend for england no doubt.
And tel ben fair beckham has played for england with those 3 lions on his chest with the best intentions..
Maybe not all the time, but most of he always came of that pitch after giving his all..
He in that respect earned mine..

Greece....sliding on his knees after that goal...Don't tell me that you were not jumping all over the place going nuts all hailing beckham..

I was... *nods head once!*..

he has earned his place in my eyes..

That could be true of many, many footballers who may have deserved his place more than he has

Concur.

I also threw a full can of beer at my telly that day. We'd just equalised then let them score to go 2-1 up. I had absolutely no control, just hurled the beer in anger. The free kick will live long in the memory.

Moore+Beckham=Crumpets+Potato Cakes

Top bloke is Beckham. A role model in terms of behaviour and a smarter bloke than he gets credit for. I mean, he has built "Brand Beckham" and earned a shitload of money. With help of course. He always comes across to me as very humble, and seems to do a fair bit for charity without using it to raise his own profile. And achieved his boyhood dream of playing for the club he loved (even if it was them). Nothing but respect for the guy.

And there were periods in his career when he was genuinely one of the best players in the world. Granted, not all the time, but he has been a damn fine player at times.

I have no real feelings for England but i am always impressed by the passion Becks shows on the pitch. I think he's a great role model to kids wanting to make it. Plays his heart out. So yeah, if he gets that cap then fair play to him.

Does he not mean he should see out his contract? That's what I thought he meant.
