A couple of civil engineers live next to me and they are very nice people.

Very Flanders like though.

You only really need to go to school to learn basic maths, to read and write to a competent level. Most of the rest of useful knowledge can be picked up through the University of Life, unless you want to specialise, then you obviously take some kind of Further Education in that subject.
I greatly admire those of you like Damocles who are experts in their particular field and clever scientists like Benny and LM.

They never scored 100 goals a season like I did, or went game after game of cricket not out (It is so hard to judge lbw when you are batting) but they have been sucesses in their chosen fields.
So, Jimmy Grummble, don't slag off intelligent people. If you know enough to pay your bills you have succeeded. Well done.I am sure your parents and social workers are proud of you.

I do not, of course, include civil engineers in the above.

Actually, I was on schoolboy forms with Bolton. Unfortunately, after actually taking a proper look at me, they decided that I was crap and got rid. I spent quite a few years trying to become a footballer, which is why I am late to the game, I'm 23 and still a few months away from a successful degree.

So many people in my experience were led on by footballclubs.
There was atime when to sign on schoolboy forms you had to have them endorsed by the school. We always spoke to the parents before we signed, just to make them aware that the kid might not make it. Burnley were the worst offenders for signing people for once you were signed you were off limits to other clubs.
At least you have made alternative arrangements (quite successfully it seems). There are many who don't.

I know that I am lucky. My partner in crime in the team we were scouted in went on to play for a couple of League 1 clubs professionally, got injured and was then effectively told that he was getting released after he suffered a cruciate injury, and that his career as a footballer, and pretty much everything he had ever wanted, was over. Think he was about 19.

He didn't fare so well for a bit. I have also decided that since I am obviously too crap to be a footballer, I will become the world's greatest coach! ;)

My nephew is quite decent at the moment, he's on trials with United (his dad is a rag) and hopes to be the next great defender. He's 8 years old, I think it's disgusting.

It isn't intelligensia snobbery at all.

Firstly, this language is a dynamic beast, evolving over thousands of years. The very least amount of respect you should show it, is having the ability to use it correctly when you clearly know how.

Secondly, human beings are preconditioned to delight in order, and be disturbed by chaos. For example, why do we have to alter a slightly off centre picture? Or, why is it that many people have an 'organised mess' upon their work desks? Everybody has a system of doing things, with an order to them. Perhaps it isn't distinguishable by all around them, but there is order in everything.

I went to school with many geeks, and was one of those guys at school that was comfortable in any crowd. In fact, in primary school, there was this quite lad called John. He was a bit overweight, not in to his sports, didn't really have any friends, constantly spent each break or lunch reading in the playground while we were kicking a football about. We used to take the piss out of him quite badly.

5 years ago, John invented a new type of networking switching mechanism and sold it to IBM, instantly becoming an overnight millionaire. He was 18.

Another geek friend of mine is diving in the Pacific as we speak, trying to determine the effects of climate change upon the sea creatures in the deepest parts of the ocean.

Another is a local councillor and plans to stand as a Labour MP in the next election.

These are in addition to the huge number of economists, Doctors, lawyers, accountants and business school grads.

I also know a depressing amount of crackheads, thugs, and minimum wage workers. Guess which were the geeks and which were the footballers?

Yawn sell your boring story to hollywood so they can make a feel good movie where everyone wins and the guy with speks get the fit bird, snigger....

Lets settle this once and for all:

Go and ask Bill Gates if it was worth it. I bet you he has a smile fucking ear to ear. By the way, the guy who pays your wages? He was a geek.

The second law only applies in isolated systems. I would say that humanity is anything but that.

You don't pay your own wages unless you happen to be Chairman of the Bank of England.
