What is the UEFA Nations League?

This new tournament, beginning next year, will see European nations competing against each other in a league format. The top four nations will then compete in the 'Final Four', a summer showpiece event to be held in 2019.

The UEFA Nations League is the culmination of six years of planning by European football's governing body.
What's the format and how will it work?

A total of 55 nations will be divided up into four mini-leagues (A, B, C, D). League allocation will be determined by each country's UEFA ranking in November 2017. The leagues will be tiered with the highest ranking nations in League A, the next highest in League B and so on.

Each league will then be split into groups, made up of three or four teams. At the end of each round of fixtures, four teams will be relegated to the league below and four teams will be promoted to the league above. They will play at their new league level in the next version of the competition, which will start in 2020.

What is the Final Four and how does it work?

The four group winners from League A will compete in semi-finals (one leg only) and then a final with the winner being crowned Nations League champion.

The Final Four will always occur the summer after the group stages.
When will the matches take place?

The league/group matches will take place on six days spread across international breaks in September, October and November.

The Final Four matches will then take place during the following summer after club competitions have ended.
Is this the end of friendly matches?

The number of friendlies played by European nations will be greatly reduced, but they will not disappear completely. There will still be time for nations to play friendlies, particularly in the build up to World Cups and European Championships.

What benefits does this new tournament have?

The idea behind the UEFA Nations League is to reduce the number of meaningless friendlies and try to ensure nations face opponents of similar quality.

In addition to this, UEFA have added a rule which gives lower ranked teams better opportunities to reach the Euros. The 16 lowest ranked teams will now be guaranteed one of the 24 qualifying spots at the European Championships.
How can you watch it?

Sky Sports have won the right to host every England match in the inaugural competition.

"Showing England in competitive matches exclusively live for the first time in seven years is great news for our viewers with the UEFA Nations League putting the top nations against each other regularly," said Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports.
