Middlesbrough host Manchester City in the third round of the FA Cup trying to continue their recent run at the Riverside against their big-spending opponents.

Boro beat City 2-0 last season and previously thumped the Blues 8-1 in the last game of the 2007/08 season.

But Gordon Strachan's side go into this clash in indifferent form in the Championship, winning just two games since he took over.

But at least the Teessiders registered their first home win under the Scot with a 3-0 success over Scunthorpe United on Boxing Day.

In contrast, City are in good form in the top flight at present, winning their first two games under new boss Roberto Mancini, to make it three wins on the bounce.

Boro news

Boro boss Strachan is facing a major selection crisis ahead of City's visit.

Strachan could go into the game with just one recognised striker in Marcus Bent, who has extended his loan spell from Birmingham.

Dave Kitson has returned to Stoke after his loan while Leroy Lita is suspended following his sending-off against Scunthorpe.

Jeremie Aliadiere, who has played much of his football for the club to date as a wide midfielder, is still struggling with the ankle problem which kept him out of the game at Barnsley.

However, Strachan has insisted he will not pair youngsters Jonathan Franks and 16-year-old Luke Williams, who became the youngest man to play for Boro since 1905 when he was introduced as a substitute at Barnsley, together in attack.

Elsewhere, on-loan midfielder Isaiah Osbourne is ineligible, but is injured in any case, while David Wheater (ankle and knee) and Emanuel Pogatetz (hamstring) are also doubts.

Seb Hines (ankle and knee), Didier Digard (back) and Matthew Bates (cruciate ligament) remain on the sidelines.

Man City news

Shaun Wright-Phillips is City's major injury concern ahead of Saturday's trip to the Riverside.

Wright-Phillips has missed the last three games with an ankle injury but with Stephen Ireland (hamstring) out for a fortnight, the England man could be a useful addition.

Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor are both missing on African Cup of Nations duty, leaving new boss Mancini short of numbers in defence and attack, with Roque Santa Cruz (calf) also on the doubtful list

Referee Stuart Atwell, Replay date (if needed) 13th January.

It would be typical to lose today even with our best team out.

I hope Robi plays at least 70 minutes today, Boro are the kind of team he could do some real damage against and get his confidence up again.

Don't think so. Might be a bit harsh sticking it up just over an hour before kick off though...*

Yeah, I've been worrying about that. It could easily ruin my Saturday.

I'm sure you all know but the team that beats Boro has gone on to lose in the final in each of the last five seasons

The snow's not that bad, they're obviously just scared and in two minds whether or not to turn up.
