LS Lowry's City painting goes up for auction 03/06/2008 11:00
A painting by LS Lowry depicting a City game from the 1930s is expected to sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction this Friday.
‘Manchester City v Sheffield United’, thought to be from based on the match played at Maine Road in October 1938, could fetch between £700,000 and £1m at Christies.
Rachel Hidderley, Christies Director and Co-Head of 20th Century British Art says: “Manchester City v Sheffield United is from a small but important group of paintings in which Lowry depicts and actual event rather than a composite image of different locations or impressions.
“The date of the work, combined with the title, suggests that the match depicted is Manchester City’s 3:2 home win against Sheffield United on 22nd October 1938.
“Lowry was a keen football supporter, and a City fan, and in the present work he concentrates on the home crowd rather than the team members, using the occasion of the match to concentrate on depicting the personalities of the individuals attending.”
This painting, along with three other works by Lowry, can be viewed this week before the auction itself, which starts at 10.30am on Friday.
