Summat Bastard said in another thread got me thinking...

Over the last three years or so, how many which players were actually identified and signed by the manager? Or rather which players were signed 'in spite' of them?

For me it's probably easier to identify the players that have been brought into the club with little or no input from the then manager. My list would be..

Jo
Robinho
Tevez
A Johnson
Yaya Toure
Silva
And probably Milner
I also suspect that most if not all of the young talent we've signed has had little or no input from the manager.

Any more? or am I wrong with any? Is it a good thing that we do this? Are the manager signings as good as the players brought in by Marwood et al?

Personally, with the exception of Jo, and the timing of the Robinho signing, I think 'on paper' the backroom signings have been better than those directly attributed to the manager, even if one or two haven't quite lived up to their billing.

I Think Silva is 100% a Mancini signing and probably YaYa too (he loves a DM you know!)

Interesting thread.

It seems that Liverpool have put someone alongside Hodgson to deal with transfers but he says he will still be the one who says yes or no.

With everything they have to deal with it would be impossible for any manager to deal with the to and fro of the transfer windows and do a coaching job at the same time.

I would have thought the system at City is that they sit down with Mancini and agree a list of targets and then it's down to Marwood etc to see if they can get them in.

We know that Robinho was more of a statement of intent from the owners and, initially at least, it did the job.

The whole 'director of football' thing is arse backwards in this country. If the DoF is to be successful, then they need to be a long term appoitment that has had a say in who becomes manager. That way there is little chance of him clashing with the manager

The attempts at big "marquee signings" like Kaka have come from Garrrrrrrrry and The Good Shake. The others I would imagine come from Hughes/Mancini/Marwood with opinions sought from Kidd and Platt.

It would be impossible to say. As long as the manager isn't lumbered with players he doesn't want at the expense of players he needs then it is ok.

Given our history with signings I'd be very reluctant to give any manager a free hand with the cheque book though.

Robbie Fowler
Steve McManaman
Roque Santa Cruz

I reckon Milner was identified by Hughes. He's a Hughes type player, but then Hughes fell on his sword. City went through with it anyway.

Not 6 months after he was sacked, I agree with Timps that Milner is Marwoods buy.

probably all to do with the timing. I reckon Hughes would have signed him at the end of the season had he still been here. The wheels would have probably been in motion throughout last season.

Oh that guy. Thoroughly uninspiring signing that was, whoever was responsible for it.

Can someone not from Yorkshire change the title of the thread to Who Signed Whom please?

Barton attacked Dabo because he's a scouse lowlife. He punched him in the back of the head and when he fell on the ground half unconscious he continued to punch him in the face and then stuck his finger in Dabo's eye.

Barton even managed to punch Dicov who was attempting to stop the attack.
