Manchester City are close to completing a deal for Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli after reaching a compromise £23 million fee with the Italian champions.

The transfer is not likely to be finalised until after City's opening game of the season against Tottenham on Saturday.

City are also increasingly confident of making a breakthrough on James Milner's drawn-out transfer saga. It is believed only Stephen Ireland's failure to agree personal terms with Aston Villa is holding up the deal.

Villa have accepted an offer of around £17 million plus the former Irish international, though City are thought to be ready to make a straight cash bid should Ireland's demands prove an obstacle.

Celtic are prepared to offer Craig Bellamy an escape from Eastlands on loan. The Welshman is also a target for Tottenham, though City are unwilling to sell to their Premier League rivals.
