What is the homegrown rule? Do they have to have come through our academy, or any academy in England?

I thought it was our academy, but not entirely sure.

No, simply that they need to be Brit or naturalised. I think.

I think it's just English players in your club but I may be wrong. So buying James Milner would be a useful signing really.

Would he be starting lineup?

Right, here's the rules.

Quote:
"The definition of home grown is trained for three years under the age of 21 by somebody in the English and Welsh professional system.

So of our squad, that would include Bellamy, Lescott, Richards, Ireland, Onuoha, Barry, Hart, Johnson, Johnson, Wright-Phillips, Boyata, and all of the other youth players. Oh, and Bridge.

There's also a limit of 25 players, but anyone under 21 doesn't count towards that limit. So that presumably means you can't just have a load of academy players that never actually get a game counting towards your home grown quota. But you can name them and have them take up one of the 25 places.

So Milner looks like a good idea looking at this.

Good question.

I'm a bit confused as to where his favoured position is, he played well on the wing with Newcastle and if I remember correctly he had a good spell on the wing for Villa when Young wasn't there or injured. If Shauny or Bellamy do go and the rumours are true, I do think Milner would be the perfect replacement.

He's obviously also played in central midfield for Villa, but the last central midfielder we signed from Villa has been a steady signing. I think if Milner gets a chance in the World Cup it will obviously decide whether we want to sign him.

I think he has the quality and may be better than a couple of our current squad, he would supply good competition around the squad which would be beneficial seen as we are aiming high next year.

Would he fit into our formation and style of play?

He has played at full back for England.

True.

Three signings in one for 24m, English and a potential star, great deal.

Loads, because most of their players are poached from other academies the second they start to look good.

SSN are reporting that we've made an offer of £20m. Wait for that to be rejected and a long drawn out process to follow where Martin O'Neill nearly has a nervous breakdown.

Well work out what he's worth, and then add 50% English player tax onto that. Probably more with the new rules. To be fair, he's probably the best English midfielder that's not already at a top club. Well, I suppose Gerrard isn't now either.

Prolly worth more than that tbf.

Sky also reckon it will rise to £25 with add-ons.

If Mancini's last signing was anything to go by, Milner will be an excellent signing and one for the future.

Over-rated in my opinion.
