You can edit all you like, he's still English
Well in that case, Victor Moses is Nigerian. The whole issue is besides the point anyway.
It isn't exclusively English young players that are overhyped, the same goes on all over the world. Because we experience the English media, we obviously get more hype about English players but the same applies to other countries at well. Giovani Dos Santos was hailed as the next big thing in Spain and he couldn't make it in the Spurs team. Huntelaar was praised all-over and has floundered at Madrid and Milan. Young Brazilians have come and gone (Jo, anyone?) - the overhyping of youngsters isn't exclusively English. Johnson could become a very good player - then again his progress could stagnate and he could just sit float around the lower end of the Premiership for all of his career. However, he undoubtedly has potential. Wonderkids such as Rooney and Fabregas don't occur very often and it's very easy to say that there is more of them abroad than from England but then that can be explained by virtue of sheer numbers, not because of some inherent flaw in the English game. The point of going for potential rather than current skill is that it is financally more lucrative. Yes, the club has more money available to it than any other in the world but I'm pretty sure the plan is not for money to be thrown at the club indefinitely and the owners will expect the club to support itself to some extent. Considering the increasing likelihood of a quota system, I can't see the harm in trying to bring in young English talent, especially when that talent has already shown itself capable of playing in the Premiership (a skill that many foreign imports fail to share).
