Just been doing some quick sums (because I was rather bored) to see if there was any truth in my theory that City's first-team squad doesn't cost a lot more than United's.

Man City (£181M) - Man United (£187M+?)

Shav Given (£6M) - Edwin Van der Sar (£2M)
Micah Richards (YA) - Gary Neville (YA)
Kolo Toure (£16M) - Rio Ferdinand (£30M)
Vincent Kompany (£6M) - Nemanja Vidic (£7M)
Wayne Bridge (£14M) - Patrice Evra (£5M)
Nigel de Jong (£16M) - Michael Carrick (£18M)
Gareth Barry (£12M) - Anderson (£18M)
Stephen Ireland (YA) - Nani (£17M)
Robinho (£32M) - Antonio Valencia (£16M)
Carlos Tevez (£25M) - Wayne Rooney (£25M)
Emanuel Adebayor (£25M) - Dimitar Berbatov (£31M)

Stuart Taylor (free) - Ben Foster (£1M)
Nedum Onouha (YA) - Rafael (?)
Pablo Zabaleta (£6M) - Jonny Evans (YA)
Martin Petrov (£5M) - Owen Hargreaves (£17M)
Shaun Wright-Phillips (-£13M) - Paul Scholes (YA)
Craig Bellamy (£14M) - Ryan Giggs (YA)
Roque Santa Cruz (£17M) - Michael Owen (free)

It's all rather rough with figures mainly from Wikipedia and the odd fraction of a million missed off, but it just goes to show that our spending isn't actually all that outrageous. Admittedly it's over a shorter period of time, but the point still stands that we've not really spent any more than United on our (possible) first choice 18.

I was really bored.

Are you still bored because I'd be interested to see how Chelsea's team matches up?

didn't hughes say that the figure being quoted that we paid for bellamy was way off the mark so was prob more like 9/10 mill same for Bridge as well I reckon

I was going to say the same thing! I know Bellamy didn't cost £14m, that was just the figure given in the press. Hughes said it wasn't anywhere near that (thought to be more like £10m)

I know the prices aren't necessarily correct, but I thought I'd go with the 'generally accepted' amounts, even if they're wrong. I couldn't decide what to do for SWP, but seeing as we sold him, it is technically correct.

Chelsea (£204M + Gallas)

Petr Cech (£7M)
Jose Bosingwa (£16M)
John Terry (YA)
Ricardo Carvalho (£20M)
Ashley Cole (£5M + Gallas)
Michael Essien (£24M)
Frank Lampard (£11M)
Michael Ballack (free)
Florent Malouda(£13M)
Nicolas Anelka (£15M)
Didier Drogba (£24M)

Ross Turnbull (free)
Branislav Ivanovic (£9M)
Paulo Ferreira (£13M)
John Obi Mikel (£16M)
Deco (£8M)
Yuri Zhirkov (£18M)
Salomon Kalou (£5M)

I've been kind and left out the £30M Shevchenko. Sturridge didn't even get a look in.

Liverpool (£130M) - Arsenal (£89M + ?)

Pepe Reina (£6M) - Manuel Almunia (?)
Glen Johnson (£17M) - Baccary Sagna (£7M)
Jamie Carragher (YA) - William Gallas (P/Ex)
Martin Skrtel (£6M) Thomas Vermaelen (£10M)
Fabio Aurelio (free) - Emmanuel Eboue (?)
Javier Mascherano (£18M) - Cesc Fabregas (£2M)
Yossi Benayoun (£5M) - Denilson (£6M)
Steven Gerrard (YA) - Tomas Rosicky (£8M)
Dirk Kuyt (£9M) - Andre Arshavin (£15M)
Alberto Riera (£8M) - Eduardo da Silva (£7M)
Fernando Torres (£25M) - Robin van Persie (£3M)

Diego Cavalieri (£3M) - Lukasz Fabianski (?)
Daniel Agger (£6M) - Mikael Silvestre (£1M)
Andrea Dossena (£7M) - Aaron Ramsey (£5M)
Lucas Leiva (£6M) - Samir Nasri (£13M)
Ryan Babel (£12M) - Theo Walcott (£12M)
Nabil El Zhar (YA) - Nicklas Bendtner (YA)
David N'Gog (£2M) - Carlos Vela (negligable)

I'll stop now. Though Liverpool do seem to have a relatively sh*t bench compared to us, United, Chelsea and also Arsenal.

You've got to hand it to Arsene Wenger thats a talented squad for under 100 mill

Yup, some genius signings in there - Fabregas for £2m, Van Persie for £3m...

Arsene and Arsenal are genius however they seriously need to see some new faces otherwise I think they will struggle this season. Their title race ended December/January last season and now with Liverpool and well, us on the rise, I dont think his usual guile of pulling youngsters from no where in to the squad is going to happen. I've been wrong before.

They have got Rosicky and Eduardo returning though and I would expect a few signings with the 40 or so million they recieved of City

i'd actually be ever so slightly upset if we fuck over arsenal, i'd much rather we displace any of the other 3 but i've always had a bit of a soft spot for them under wenger.

Yes they lack holding MF and a couple of good defenders now though. I am not too worried about their plight. I've City to concern me.

Word is they're in for De Rossi. Won't happen but he would be a great signing for them.

I can't write Arsenal off (not that anyone here really is). Arshavin was very very good last season. He made a massive difference. If he can continue that form and keep fit they'll still be a good side.
