Benjani could leave City - paper
BENJANI Mwaruwari’s Manchester City future is in doubt after it was revealed the club is preparing for a “cull” of the squad before the start of the new season.
British newspapers are speculating that City boss Mark Hughes will listen to offers for the Zimbabwean captain whose season was wrecked by injuries.
The 31-year-old striker, currently in Zimbabwe, is constantly linked with a return to Portsmouth where he was a fans favourite before his £8,5 million move.
Mwaruwari has a £1,2 million house in the south coast and a return to Portsmouth would interest him, although he may have to take a cut on his £60,000-a-week wages.
Hughes has signed Blackburn striker Santa Cruz and the club is said to be in the hunt for Barcelona hitman Samuel Eto’o and Manchester United’s want-away striker Carlos Tevez – which would limit Benjani’s appearances.
The Daily Star claims City will get rid of Mwaruwari, Darius Vassell, Ched Evans, Felipe Caicedo, Dietmar Hamann, Gelson Fernandes, Michael Johnson, Michael Ball, Tal Ben Haim and Javier Garrido to make room for big money signings.
Benjani, who only made eight Premier League appearances last season, told Setanta Sports this week that he expected to be a Manchester City player when the season starts in August. He has a year left on his contract.
"I still have a contract with Manchester City and I've not received any offers from anyone," he told Soccer Week.
"I enjoy a good relationship with my fellow team-mates, the technical team and the fans and don't see any reason to leave. I want to score as many goals as I possibly can for City and look forward to winning trophies and playing in the Champions League with them."
Keep dreaming Benji boy.
