from the guardian

Manchester City are on the verge of taking their summer spending close to £80m after Lazio accepted a £17m bid for the Serbia international Aleksandar Kolarov today.

Kolarov is an attacking left-back renowned for his powerful shooting and ability from set pieces – his style has seen him being labelled as the Serbian Roberto Carlos – and he has been identified to take over from Wayne Bridge in a new-look defence also featuring Jerome Boateng, the £10.5m recruit from Hamburg.

Bridge has not convinced the City manager, Roberto Mancini, that he is good enough for a team that aspires to challenge for the Premier League title in the coming season and the former England international can expect to start on the bench if the 24-year-old Kolarov agrees to become the club's fourth signing of the summer.

Real Madrid, Juventus and Internazionale have also approached Lazio but City are the only club to have reached an agreement and are hopeful Kolarov, who played in two of Serbia's group games in the World Cup, will not be deterred by the fact that his potential new employer will not be involved in the Champions League. If everything goes according to plan, he should take his medical in the coming days and will link up with the rest of Mancini's squad on their pre-season trip to the United States

Will be a welcome addition when its done and dusted..
We needed improvement in those areas and now we have it....

Good player from what I've seen and heard. Fingers crossed the guy can defend, I'd bet he can't though. The one position that needs defensive cover, Mancini will put an attacking winger who doesn't get back. My prediction anyway.

He's a very good left back, with the potential to be one of the best in the world in my opinion - and he can definitely defend.

Watched him quite a few times as Lazio are a team I occasionally follow - not so long ago i mentioned him on here as a player i'd like to see us being linked with, very happy that we've gone in for him. 17million is a rip off though, he's only worth 10 at most imo.

You're forgetting that money doesn't matter when you are the richest club on the planet :D

Yes. City are currently operating on a player inflation rate of 170%.

Looks like this could fall apart..
Manchester City's move for Lazio's Aleksandar Kolarov is on the edge of collapse as club president Claudio Lotito feels their €19million offer is not sufficient.

Il Corriere dello Sport claims City have started to look elsewhere to fill the postion on the left side. Targets include Gareth Bale of Tottenham who was linked with Juventus by Tuttosport in their Saturday morning edition.

Lotito is not happy with the latest offer for the Serbian which had started at €13m and worked its way up through haggling.

But as the Italian holds off for more of City's cash, Roberto Mancini has been told to abandon the move by the club's owners who feel they have already offered over the odds for the left-back.

The move now hangs in the balance and could topple unless Lotito accepts the bid.

On Friday the chief told the press there had been no agreement with any club despite reports claiming City had come away with the player following a reported meeting with Lazio on Thursday.

Kolarov's deal in Rome expires in 2012.

Hope not..But if it means us not being held to ransom then i say sack it..
id rather us stand up and not be made to look like pushovers.
Than pay over the odds for a player..

I think I'd prefer that Fábio Coentrão anyway (although the way Benfica value their players that's probably not very likely either...)

I think what we offered is already over the odds, and obviously we don't mind paying over the odds occasionally. Hopefully this will change once we start getting in the CL, but atm we have to use our cash to get the players. The problem here is that Italian crook of a chairman is asking for WAY over the odds, and I agree, tell him to get fucked. It's not like we haven't got a decent left back - I think Bridge played well at times last season, it's just his injury proneness that's a concern.

If Kolarov does sign, who will we then get rid of?

I'm assuming Garrido would go and Bridge back up?
