But there are ifs and buts in every game or season somewhere.

If we'd have been good enough, we'd have won.

I reckong that's the most important part.

You can't argue that doesn't sometimes play a major part, or bad officiating?

You can be "good enough" and comfortably the better side, but still not win

That doesn't apply to this result though, we deserved to lose across the balance of the game, by turning in a gash second half performance

Micah staying put says Hughes.

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has ruled out letting Michah Richards leaving the club.

Richards, who has 11 senior caps, has seen his England chances diminish over the last 18 months, with Fabio Capello banishing him to the to the Under-21s since taking charge.

He has also struggled to maintain his place in City's starting XI with Pablo Zabaleta and Nedum Onuoha rivalling him for selection.

But Hughes is insistent that Richards is a big part of his plans, as he looks to fend off reported interest from Aston Villa and Tottenham.

"Micah Richards is not going anywhere in January," said Hughes.

"He is a big part of what we are trying to do here and we know he can improve.

"Don't forget, he is still a very young man.

"His football experience is great for someone of so few years and sometimes he doesn't get enough credit for that.

"But he is nowhere near the finished article. There is a huge amount of potential still to be tapped into.

"Micah's physical attributes lend themselves to so many positions.

"We just have to make sure he is training and playing correctly because he will grow into an outstanding player.

"He had a real burst of attention when he broke into the team but with a young player you always have a period where they plateau out.

"You have to get used to people taking a more critical view of you and maybe Micah has found that adjustment difficult.

Improper use of the backslash aside, I agree. Put himself about tonight, as did most of the team. Good physicality and aggression throughout.

So many defenders stand off giggs and give him time. Richards used his pace and strength and made him look old. He's playing well, just needs to stop doing the odd stupid thing.

Only this one. Gets too confusing otherwise.

The only true quality they have now. Without him they are very very ordinary.

pains me to say it but he could drag them to the final on his own

apart from that - very very ordinary

Got to agree with Timps on the dive, it was plain embarrassing. Could yet play himself to the World Cup. Should start against t'Egypt

he takes two steps forward and three steps back...i think at times he is a liability at the back....his ideal position in a team would be as a wing back in a 3-5-2...

For me its Zabaleta ahead of Richards...Zabs is a typical old fashioned footballer, no nonsense, gets stuck in, has the right atitude, if only he didnt get so many bookings....

I heart Zabs

Mah, Zabs gives plenty of heart but not enough smarts.

Micah is improving still, he has a way to go still but if he doesnt keep putting ion weight and keeps his head down, he'll get good.

Don't rate zabs as much as everyone else does, think he's average.

Richards and Zabs are both as bad as each other when it comes to going on a wander up field and leaving a gap for the opposition to run into. However, Richards is far more of an attacking threat in my opinion - he's quicker, bigger (it's a hard job to stop him once he gets going) and a threat from corners. Defensively, neither are brilliant (though Richards is in decent form) - attacking-wise, Richards is better by a mile.
