Foé remembered 26/06/2008 09:15

Manchester City Football Club today mark the fifth anniversary of the tragic death of Marc-Vivien Foé.

The midfielder played 38 times for City in his season on loan from Lyon, scoring nine times, but passed away after collapsing on the pitch while playing for Cameroon.

Capped 64 times by his country, Marc also spent a season with West Ham United in the late 1990s.

He was the last City player to score a goal at Maine Road, and as a mark of respect the number 23 shirt that he wore during his time at the Club was retired.

A true gentleman off the pitch, Marc is still fondly remembered by everyone that met him.

New Chief Operating Officer Paul Aldridge said: "I spent a week with him in Lyon working on his transfer to West Ham at the time and couldn't speak highly enough of him.

"He was a really nice lad and his death was a tragedy."

Best loan signing we ever had such a shame he passed away so young. Respect and thoughts go out to MVF and his family this morning.

Indeed. Last week i dug out the old video of City 02 season, first one back in the Prem, and some of the goals MVF scored were superb. Not had a midfielder who can score that many since.

RIP duderino.

I was thinking just the other day, when he passed away Thierry Henry and fellow Frenchmen they all paid tribute to him at a match. How did they know him so well? I know he played for Lyon but did he attend the French football academy or similar, anyone?

Given he died playing in the African Cup of Nations, it would indicate he wasn't French Danny.

He was a laugh that season he played for us. Guilty of some real shocking misses early doors, then started banging them in from all over the place.]

I still think all that retiring the no 23 shirt business is sentimentality just for the sake of it.

^think it was testament to his character and that he had some french familial connection. probably played in african cup of nations for one of his parents countries.
RIP Marc

RIP Mr Foe.
However, I think I'm right in saying he was out of contract at City when he died and something about City's remembrance of the bloke sticks in my craw at times.
Sorry.

Yeah, his loan deal had expired and he'd already gone back to whence he came.
