Manchester City striker Benjani has no plans to return early from his thigh injury.

The Zimbabwean missed the start of the Premier League season last weekend after picking up a thigh strain in mid-July.

Although City are currently down to the bare bones up front with Valeri Bojinov also on the sidelines and Jo due back from the Olympics shortly, Benjani does not want to risk returning early and suffering a setback.

Benjani is currently taking each day as it comes and if he can start working on his fitness in two weeks' time then he hopes to be available for manager Mark Hughes within a month.

"It's so far so good. I'm working on my thigh slowly but surely. In the next two weeks I hope to start running," he told Sky Sports News.

Back in a month
Asked when he sees himself returning he replied: "In the next month.

"If you are out injured it takes a few weeks to regain your fitness. I don't want to suffer the same injury again."

Hughes has been left with just Ched Evans and Daniel Sturridge up front and while Benjani believes the pair have big careers ahead of them, the youngsters need to play alongside experience in order to mature as players.

"I'm very, very frustrated with what's happening. All the team's strikers are out," he continued.

"We're only left with two young strikers and while they are good they need some strikers with experience to help them along."

It's good that he wants to recover properly.

But I'm in sweat that he wants to take his time when we really need strikers.

No mate. He doesn't want to be relied upon.

Then you are wrong. No striker wants to be out of the game. Every striker wants to score goals. It's ridiculous to suggest Benji is scared to play in case he doesn't score.

PS. Particularly given we are trying to buy a striker, and Jo is back soon. So if Benji comes back now he's got a shot at being in the team. If he comes back in a month we might have Santa and Jo, so a place on the bench for Benji, which is not what he wants.

He'll be back just as soon as he's fit and he'll score goals for us because he's good.

Lots of PL players would much rather be on easy street injured or sat on the bench. Fact.

Harry Redknapp has admitted as much with his own team.

When did you start believing anything that Harry Catflap says? Schoolboy error.

Huh? Incorrect use of the term 'Fact'. It must actually be remotely similar to a fact before it can be labelled one.

Ha ha true .

I believed it because he was having a go at his own team. I see the possible error of my ways  (still think there's some truth in it though).

if players had that level of committment and lack of love for the game then they wouldn't make it past shoolbooy terms with any club.

Interesting different spin on OS:

Benjani hoping for quicker than expected return 20/08/2008 16:15

Having been out for almost one month after pulling a thigh muscle in training, Zimbabwean striker Benjani has today revealed he expects a return to duty sooner rather than later.

Of his injury the former Portsmouth man said: "It's so far so good. If you are out injured it takes a few weeks to regain your fitness. I don't want to suffer the same injury again.

"I'm working on my thigh slowly but surely. In the next two weeks I hope to start running."

And after originally looking like 10 weeks out, he expects to return to first team action, "In the next month."

City currently have Darius Vassell, Valeri Bojinov and Jo all unavailable at the weekend, and Benjani summed up: "We're only left with two young strikers and while they are good they need some strikers with experience to help them along.

"I'm very, very frustrated with what's happening."

You are right, we need him fit 100% rather than having him get injured again.
