They were. I have to say, even though we were only against "sub-standard" opposition, I thought both goals were crackers

I saw Hamann's goal but not Petrov's.

Get a grip they had a spell for about 15min after half time. We are still rusty we did well.

Mark Hughes praised the performances of new signing Jo and goalscorer Martin Petrov as he got his Manchester City reign off to a winning start in Faroe Islands.

Petrov and Dietmar Hamann were on target as City recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory over EB/Streymur to make the second leg of their Uefa Cup qualifying tie on July 31 an apparent formality.

"We created good chances and I was pleased with Jo's performance," said Hughes of his £19million striker.

"He showed great awareness of players around him, and once he gets to know the players and the way we want to play he will be a big asset to us."

Hughes added: "Petrov was excellent, certainly in the first half. The opposition found it difficult to cope with the quality he has. He got us off on the right foot with that opening goal and pushed us towards a good performance all round.

"We hope he will be providing a lot of goals this season. He has the ability to go past people, and break through the lines.

"When you have someone like that with the technical ability to affect the game positively like that, it gives you a lot more options."

Hughes took the opportunity to bring on promising young striker Ched Evans in the second half and insisted afterwards that the Wales international, who has just signed a new three-year deal at Eastlands, will continue his development with City.

"Ched has been excellent in pre-season and I am glad we have secured him on a long-term contract now," Hughes added.

"He has a big future and that has been demonstrated by the amount of phone calls I have had from Championship managers wanting to get him out on loan.

"But I think I am going to frustrate a lot of teams at that level because he will not be going anywhere in this transfer

Good news.

Better than previous. He looked like he wanted to play for us and tried, even though it wasn't coming. Came off for Ched

Fine, looked assured enough. Excellent, looked very dangerous, a real star in the making. 4-4-2.*

*More or less. Vas likes to drift wide, Jo likes to play from deep, but at least when Petrov was crossing or Johnson and Ireland were knocking balls forward there was always a couple of players in the middle. Onuoha played pretty much as a wing back most of the game too. Not easy to see how he's going to line the team up given that EBS were hardly quality and we didn't start a number of our regular starters, but all bodes well.

Fuckin hell Gibbi, have you caught Weaveritis?

I thought we played some good, patient build up play but it's hard to break any team down that's effectively playing a 8-2-0 formation. Yes thay had a reasonable 15 min spell at the beginning of the second half and a couple of players, Hart being one, looked a bit shakey but as has been said, this was our first game of pre-season. Also, for his first ever game in a Blue shirt I thought Jo did everything he could except score. Worked hard, won balls in midfield, got into good positions and was only inches away from scoring with a header. I was suitably impressed with him and think he should do well. I'd like to see him paired with someone else though.

Roll on the start of the season I say. :D

we palyed at about 50% max and still walked it

Petrov, Ireland, Hamann and the defence did well

Vass still couldn't hit a bovines arse with a stringed instrument

Petrov, definitely man of the match for me.

Went to my local where they were showing the fucking horse racing instead of the footy. Followed the match on teletext. Saw the highlights at Setanta news. Good goals and we could have scored more.

Got to be honest, that was a stroll in the park against a real pub team. The guys did the job well considering they are probably 3 weeks away from full match fitness.

Only disappointment for me was Vass starting, I could understand playing him out wide right as we were pretty unbalanced, it became very predicatable that everything would go through Petrov, but being as they couldn't stop him it didn't really matter.

But Vass up front when Hughes could have started with Benj, Boj or Bianchi I don't really get that. 2nd leg should see a real comfortable scoreline.

I never understand our managers?

Vass isn't a right winger? I thought he was a striker?

He is but we have no one else for the job of right wing. Let me take that back, Vass is not a striker but the most suitable in our team for RW role.

But not what you'd call an out and out, line hugger. Reason I say vass out right is his pace and taking on people. Ireland is more craft and ability than physical presence for me.
