Virgin Media testing 1.5Gbps internet for lucky Londonites
By Terrence O'Brien posted Jul 25th 2011 6:01PM
Virgin Media
Jealous of Comcast customers with their 105Mbps cable hook ups or those lucky residents of the Kansas cities relishing in Google's 1Gbps service? Well add Londonites to the list of people that drive you to indulging in one of the seven deadly sins. Virgin Media has finally started testing its DOCSIS2-powered 1.5Gbps network in the heart of merry ol' England. Right now it's being enjoyed by a group of test sites around Old Street that also get a 150Mbps upload connection. Virgin claims it's the fastest broadband in the world, which may be true if you're not counting lab experiments. The really good news is that it's based on the same tech already delivering 100Mbps to residents across the country so, if the trial goes well, it should be trivial to deliver these mind numbing speeds to the rest of its customers. PR after the break.

We've still got bits of string linked from telepgraph poles to houses in our village, and exchange that hasn't been updated since 1932. Does fuck me off a tad that I pay for 'fast' broadband via BT, but the actual speed is little better than fucking dial up. :(

Unless you live in the middle of the city here, your pretty much screwed too. I pay a kings ransom a month for a 10Mbps line, when im lucky to get half that!

The rumour is Fibre is coming soon to the small town where I live, but in Spain, that could mean 10 years!

We don't do too badly. I get 6-8mbps people tell me the max in town is 15 but i don't really believe them. Considering I'm right on the tip of Cornwall its not too bad. We're getting fiber optics in 2012 i think, lots of places in Cornwall already have it.

These speeds seem pretty pathetic compared to places like Japan and South Korea though. The average connection in Korea is over 100mpbs and in Japan 1gbps is common.
