I Lots of people on here are getting very excited about the new Bright Eyes album. Squidge will explode with excitement before the week is out.

I know fuck all about Bright Eyes. I did see him years ago in Whelans pub in Dublin.

About 20 people on a tiny stage. I was at the front and nearly had my eye taken out by a chick playing a cello. They were great. Mr Eyes was drunk and took a joint from a punter and collapsed like a rag doll during the encore. Everybody cheered.

The next time I tried to see him was at Oxegen. He was so drunk he missed the ferry and bombed out of the show.

He was on the bill at Oxegen a few years after that. I stood knee deep in mud in a tent. He was brilliant.

However, I have never bought an album and know fuck all about them.

Where should I start? Is there anything I should avoid? Why isn't he playing in Dublin on this tour?

Ta!

I'd say start with "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning". His voice around that time, it's captivating. So quaky and vulnerable. He could've been singing about tiddlywinks around that time and it'd move me tbf. His voice is amazing.

Then you need to get "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" - sister album to the above. Released on the same day, it's completely different. It's deeper, lots of drugs and thoughts aboutd death on that one. It's pretty nilhistic I suppose in a lot of it's thoughts.

Them's are my favourite two albums ever.

You won't go wrong with "Lifted or The Story Is In The Soil Keep Your Ear To The Ground" either as a starting point. That's the album before the above two, the lyrical content of that album is pretty astonishing.

Oh, Holy Fools is also special (albiet a combined album with a couple of other bands)

Two of my favorite songs from that album are No Lies, Just Love and Kathy with a K's song.

I agree with Squidge though, so many good tracks off 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning".

I'm Wide Awake it's Morning is (overused word, I know) epic. So many great songs, really chilled out. I was introduced to Bright Eyes by this forum - Squidge most likely, thanks for that
