Just got a new one. Just wondering if anyone has ever connected an external HD to the USB port of their hifi? I know it works with USB sticks but not sure about an actual disk drive?

Not done it myself Noddy, but i would check to see that the hifi you are going to use it on will accept a mass storage device - should be in the spec.

I'm sure there must be other stuff to check, like drive format etc.

Good luck.

Cheers KC. It does accept mass storage, I just didn't know if that would include a hard drive or just flash memory devices? Unfortunately the speakers haven't arrived yet so I can't fire it up

I'm going to say that it will accept a portable hard drive just fine, and won't mess up the hi-fi or the hard-drive whatsoever.

You need to make sure the formats are compatible, if you're running windows you'll probably be FAT32, if the hifi is NFTS then you will have to jigger it all about and reformat etc. The Buffalo HDD i use came preformatted in FAT32 and my pc and ps3 read it as soon as i hooked it up:)

This will be of no help but I was told to buy a Western Digital external hard drive to use with my playstation. Apparently some types don't work. Perhaps it's the same deal with your hifi, it might to read all types.

The other one?

You could get the WD one to work if you did something to it. Someone explained it to me once, but I didn't listen. Something to with partitioning or formatting or something.

As you can tell, I'm no tech expert.

Don't know. Also, it doesn't work properly. Loads of the folders say "there are no files" when there are, and it doesn't see any video.

None of these issues with good old fashioned stereograms.

Stupid question, but when you're looking for videos you do move to the drop down video menu on the ps3 don't you? (my missus had me thinking she'd broken mine cos she was trying to view photos in the PS3 music section) and open using triangle, display all? this works for me.
If you plug your HDD into your PC and open it to view files it should tell you whether its FAT32 or NTFS in the side bar, if its the latter the ps3 won't read it in a month of sundays.

Not really. It's got some of Noddy's home videos of him and an African.

Can I ask a stupid question?

I want to hook one up to my PS3, it doesn't matter what brand it is, as long as it's FAT32 format?

Brand doesn't matter at all. Should read pretty much anything I think. Mine does.
