No one mention John McLaughlin yet? What a shame.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McLaughlin_%28musician%29

Pat Metheney is also a great.

But back to more mainstream, I would go for Jimmy Page; Dave Gilmour; George Harrison.

Well that's 5 isn't it?
I also have a soft spot for Chris Rea. Well someone has to like him, don't they?

Just downloaded and listened to 'G3' Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen live in Denver. Spellbounding. I forgot how much I love each and every. MAGIC.

Not a fan of Yng-vee. He should have formed a tribute band instead of Rising Force. The Australian Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow perhaps. He does place a lot of emphasis on speed but not to the extent that a lot of 80s shredders did.

I totally disagree. he's got a real feel for the instrument and some of his better solos are the slower ones - "Now is the Time" is a wonderful solo and is just some beautifully played half-bends.

He was a cut above all the 80's shredders for me. There were loads of them around in like the 86-89 era where you could put them all behind a screen and not tell one from the other. Hammett falls well within that category. Vai, Malmsteen and Satriani were among the few who actually had their own distinct sound.

His best album was the one with Joe Lynn Turner. Although Jeff Scott Soto does a star turn on "Marching Out"

Rubbish. Yngwie deserves his place in guitar god-dom.

His early albums were great but even Eclipse and Fire and Ice had some real hot spots...Demon driver, Motherless Child anyone?

He is technically a very good guitarist, his choice of 24 scalloped frets a bizarre one but fuck it, whatever works for you dude! Just lay off the burgers man! Fat bastard.

Oh yeah, and here is the most useless guitar instructional video ever. Just copy what he does folks!!!;
