Were they fuck. They were good, but not very grungy. Black Sabbath influenced the Grunge bands - listen to Sweet Leaf.

commonly recognised as being very influential.

If you want to go back, yes go back to Sabbath, go back to Cream, go back to the Kinks in 1964, coming out with those dirty riffs, while everyone else was smiling like Hermans fuckin Hermits.

The Pixies and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Without them modern Indie music would be very different.

Post 1980 has to be Joy Division. It's only now when you look back at Unknown Pleasures and Closer that it becomes clear how influential they were.

It's tricky to rock a rhyme Benny...

Think it's interesting to think about negative/positive impacts too. Yes, they inspired people...but did the legacy turn sour?!

Think you've gotta say the Wu's fantastic debut was massively influential in hip-hop circles...so many rap albums sounded like pale imitations of that (for better or worse). Also Korn pretty much spwaned the Nu-Metal scene (again, with some horrific consequences! Though some good, Deftones, for example).

V true about the Wu Tang. NWA also very inspirational.

Pink Floyd, no other band comes close in terms of originality and creativity.

I'd like to see a band nowdays hit mainstream success like these guys did without having standout singles on every album.

Brilliant band, they influenced everything from the sound recording on albums, to the structure and nature of albums themselves whilst opening up many genere's of music that mainstream had never seen before. Lyrically brilliant and musically amazing. I doubt any band will ever come close, or that any band ever has.

Although I'm not a fan myself and always thought him totally overrated, I would probably say that Elvis Presley was the person who made the black music of Rhythm and Blues acceptable to a white audience and therefore the start of Rock and Roll in the mainstream.

More recently I'd say Velvets and NYD's but in terms of influence I'd put the Pistols ahead of the Clash tbh.
