A student and his girlfriend are outraged after being called a “black couple” on their receipt by staff at a London pub.

Johnson Abraham, 24, and Roxanne Duhur, 21, claim they were the only couple dining when they received their bill at the Slug and Lettuce in Islington Green.

Mr Abraham, a mechanical engineering student from Dalston, was at the pub last month with Ms Duhur to celebrate her new job as an estate agent.

They ordered at the bar, without a table number, before going upstairs to find a seat. When they went to pay for the meal the comment “upstairs blk couple” was printed on the bill.

Mr Abraham said: “I was outraged. They wouldn't have written white couple'. I do class it as racism. It spoiled what should have been a celebration.”

Slug and Lettuce area manager Nick O'Donnell said: “We often put a note on orders to help reduce the chances of it being sent to the wrong table.

"I agree the language was inappropriate. I apologise for the upset caused.”

Mr O'Donnell offered the couple a free meal with champagne, but Mr Abraham said: “I want an apology. The manager apologised but the waitress hasn't.”

“I said: “What do you mean? She said, ‘I know why you’re coming in here’. She was implying we were trying to steal stuff.”

The woman shouted at Leona in front of other customers, but despite being in tears the singer refused to leave.

“I was so angry my dad had to drag me out of the shop. I’d never experienced anything like that. Being judged by the colour of your skin is horrible.”

Two weeks ago Leona was punched at a book signing by a crazed fan rejected at an early stage in the X Factor auditions.

Me and the missus were discussing this last night, we were under the impression that is what they like to be called these days, all their associations and pressure groups seem to go under it. Maybe we should go back to the good old days of "coloureds"

Maybe they'd rather not be defined by their skin colour?

Then why do they form groups like the black police association amongst other things? I don't mind being called white cos I am, it's also written next to the little box I tick on many forms (including the government census), there are always black and asian boxes too. It's my opinion that many people of "ethnic backgrounds" go looking for racism where it isn't there, much like gay people do, it's victimism.
