It was never likely to represent Obama, in all fairness. The racism would just be too blatant, and the New York Post wouldn't go there. Plus, the cartoon just wouldn't work if it had a couple of coppers shooting Obama for no apparent reason, there was obviously some current affairs-related satire in there that we were unaware of.

It was also just after the police shot a Chimpanzee dead in Connecticut. It is undoubtedly ill-conceived, however the defence of it making reference to the Chimpanzee death does hold a bit of water. The racist implication is still evident though - and to suggest that the cartoonist/editor would not realise that implication would be naive I feel. They probably knew it would cause controversy, and knew they could just about defend themselves by making reference to the news story.

Rating: Only slightly less racist than it first appears
