I have a mate who does a fair bit of distance running and he swears by this approach, the premise being that if you look at the way you run/walk in bare feet that's prob the best way to do it i.e. on the balls of your feet - that way the calf and upper leg muscles can act as shock absorbers rather than transmission of shock straight into the hip joint. I had my gait analysed a while ago and I have a horrific, off centred heel strike - the way the leg buckles when running is quite scary - for me this manifests itself with hip problems when I have insufficient cushioning (hip flexors is my self diagnosis). I am going to have to give up footy soon but I have been waiting to retrain my running style before I start any serious running, which I will have to do to keep me sane once footy is gone...

I reckon the barefoot running thing makes some sense but the problem for most of us is that we've spent years in structured shoes and trainers.
However much people are told and read that they must convert to barefoot running very gradually over six months or more, the majority just "go for it" and then wonder why their achilles, calf or hamstring goes twang.

Nike?!!?!!?!!
Even if I did like them, the fitting is too wide.

They're very comfortable over long distances, took them round the Greater Manchester Marathon and my feet were fine at the end of it (compared to a couple of bad blisters on my toes with the old Asics after the Great North Run). My knees were less fine for a week or so but I think that was down to it being my first time over that distance rather than the footwear.

Walking round with holes in your hands and feet is showy DS so anything that covers them up seems demure by comparison.
