I've never got how the Sun's gravitational pull is just enough to keep all the planets in our solar system a constant distant from it without pulling them in or letting them drift away, even though they're different sizes and different distances away. Any ideas?

it's a beautiful image

if you have steam i heartily recommend buying universe sandbox, it runs on fairly modest systems but is really rather cool. you get to fiddle with all the aspects, relative gravity, velocity, orbits, mass etc etc, really interesting.

It's easier to think of it that the reason they're in perfect non-decaying heliocentric orbits is exactly because of their different sizes and distances from the sun. The solar system is stable now but in the inital stages of its forming there will have been dozens of large objects formed in the protoplanetary disc (ring of gas surrounding a newly formed star), most of which would have violently collided with each other producing larger and larger bodies until you end up with just a few. The size of these planets depends on the distance they are from the sun and various other conditions.

Off on my hols on friday, so this is inB4 Ryanair - if you line all the planets in our solar system up, they'd fit inbetween the earth and the moon with room to spare. Thanks NASA!
