The drama queenery over the last few days has been  though. It barely makes any difference who's in power:
  • 99% of our legislation will stay the same
  • there will be some minor changes in spending etc that will take three or four years to have any effect, if it even does have any effect at all
  • and then in 5 years time if it looks like it's fucking up the other lot will get in, change the 1% of legislation to something else, swap the spending back round and start fucking things up in the other direction

In summary: people whinging :violin:

tbf that's pretty accurate. there is some stuff that has the potential to cause worry, the human rights act coming under fire being one of them, but everything else comes under one or more of your bullet points.

The HRA thing I haven't really looked at it detail, from what I gather they're looking to repeal the HRA, put the original ECHR into UK legislation, but "de-link" it from Strasbourg so that the UK supreme court gets the ultimate ruling. That I don't have a problem with. It feels like a lot of the "OMG THERE GOING TO SCRAP ALL HUMAN RIGHTS" crowd might be going off a bit half cocked.

Same with the fox-hunting bill - "OMG THE TORIES R GOING 2 BRING BACK FOX HUTNING!!", when what they're actually proposing is a free vote for all MPs on whether there's a change in legislation. The house will vote overwhelmingly to keep things as they are and Dave gets to keep his countryside back-benchers quiet for a couple of years.

Edit - here's the tory plan for the HRA:

Meh really, if that's all they're doing.

I love the fox hunting debate.

It allowed Blair to pacify the left of his party and now DC is doing the same for the right wing of his.

It is 90% about "class warfare" and 10% about animal rights.

If you really want to make changes to animal rights or welfare there is a fucking long list of things you should prioritise before fox hunting most of which would require EU legislation so no one bothers.
