Mates asked me to be his Best Man for his wedding.

Never been one before, i know i gotta write a speech and organise a stag do.

Any suggestions from those with previous??? Or any good Best man stories?

1) You'll be nervous about your speech, no two ways about it. Remember you're not expected to be a professional comedian and everybody will be willing you to be good, and will understand any nerves.

2) Start writing your speech well in advance, that way you can do little bits at a time and fill it in as and when, rather than trying to write a 5 minute speech in one go at the last minute.

3) When it's written, practice over and over. I had a friend listen to mine a few times, you quickly get a feel for what sounds good and what to leave out. Plus you'll know it inside out and will only need a written version as a reference, rather than staring at your paper throughout.

4) Yes you have to rib your mate a bit but don't forget to do the sincere/complimentary bit - especially for the bride!

5) Keep it brief! About 5 minutes does the trick, don't try a 20 minute epic -nobody wants that.

I can see it now, Gal at the head table suited up, oversized tie knot hanging loosely a couple of buttons down, black trainers, hand resting on grooms shoulder...

"I can't tell you how privileged and grateful I am to be standing before you today as Lee's best man... I nearly died you know".

3 hour speech centred around spending Shrove Tuesday 2013 in hospital, slide show of Gal laid up, and culminating in a toast to the doctors and nurse of Manchester Royal Infirmary.

If I was you, I'd just play 'em some of me own songs. Take your guitar along for the stag do and the wedding.
They'll love it. Guaranteed! :)

dont be a twat by embarrassing the groom, which could get you on the wrong side of the bride (unless she hates you already for some reason).
actually, choose your words carefully, as you dont want to embarrass yourself.

Yeah, why don't you tell the story about the time you and your mate did that totally hilariously and slightly lewd thing, or there was that other time when you and thingummy and whatshisname went to so and so, or *hahaha* yeah *wheeze* *wipes tear from eye* *chortle* no on second thoughts you don't wanna tell that story

That would be cringe factor ten.
You need to remember your audience will probably include grand parents and children.
There are good websites with examples about.
I spent six months on my groom speech, I practised it to the cat :TopHat2

Always ALWAYS allude something happening on the stage do involving the groom and some random slag. It takes the sting out of the moment and makes the bride realise the man she's marrying is attractive to other women, confirming she's bagged a goodun.

Yeh I'd go with that SEC. Also, every best man speech should be comprised of an anecdote, instantly recognised by the stag that causes him to facepalm. You do have to remember however that you are in the 'tree of trust', and as good as your worst story about him may be your time will also come.

I produced a picture of my mate wearing a dress during my speech. I enjoyed that.

Do have one kind of funny story were i could say something along the lines of i didn't think i'd ever see this day as a long time ago we'd go to this bar on a Wednesday were they'd have a fella on playing a guitar, and they always had a coach load come in every Wednesday night, took us till about the 8th visit to realise Wednesdays was Gay night.

Other than that i've got nothing.

Don't worry Gal I've got your opening bit right here, good little ice breaker;

"You know what they say mate, if you want to know what your bird's gonna look like in 20 years time, take a look at her mother..."

*glance down the table at the mother of the bride*

"It's too late now you stupid CUNT, you've fuckin married her!!!"

*wait for laughter to die down*

"No but in all seriousness..."

Then go on to all the nice stuff.

Let me know how you get on.
